Day 53: Wells, NV to Elko, NV Total Distance: 49.0 mi Moving Avg: 11.1 Moving Time: 4:23 Today was a short day, in the name of Internet access. There was somewhere I could have stopped a bit further down the road (22 miles), but they were saying it was going to rain and I wanted to check my email, so I stopped. Today was also notable for its high speed. I seemed to be in high gear for most of they day. I wish I had slightly better control of such things, but I'm working on it. I had a bit of an adventure today. The highway had developed the bad kind of rumble strips (all the way across the shoulder) which it seems to do every now and again, so I decided to give the frontage road a shot. The road had been there for quite a while, and an exit was coming up soon, so I figured either it would end there or keep going. And there was a gate and a path right onto the road, so I took it. About three miles down the road the pavement stopped. Eit. I started looking for a way back onto the highway. No dice. The, the road ends all together. It curved around to an underpass and led away from the highway. One spur continued along the highway, but had a 'No Outlet' sign. I followed the no outlet spur looking for a way over the barbed-wire fence, but in the end I just decided to hop the fence. I found a low point, about groin hight. I detached the BOB the lifted the BOB and bike over, the climbed over myself. All in all, it went much better than I hoped. Only very minor barb-related damage, and no blood. Of course, there were a lot of very sharp plants there to make it harder, so I did get rather scratched. Oh well, it was an adventure.
