Day 57: Lovelock, NV to Silver Springs, NV Total Distance: 75.0 mi Moving Avg: 10.4 mph Moving Time: 7:11 Today started quite well. As usual, I was tempted with early tailwinds which quickly changed to headwinds. But I still managed to stay in high gear for a while. The trip to Fernley was mostly uneventful. I did get another flat front tire, though. I found the culprit easily, 1" of tire wire. The non kevlar belted Primo Comets are just not as cool. Anyway, I patched the tube and continued to Fernley. If all goes as planned, I'll pass through Fernley again in not long at all. After a quick meal in Fernley I set off for Silver Springs. It was only another 15 miles so I didn't expect it to take long at all. I noticed that the front tire had a slow leak. I decided to just try and re-inflate it. After about 20 minutes it was clear it wasn't going to hold, so I switched to my spare tube and tire. I'll pick up new spares in Carson City. Of course, all the tire changing lead to brake adjustment problems. Overall, the maintenance set me back more than an hour. But in exchange, I did get some nice tailwinds along the first stretch of US 95A. US 95A sucked. The traffic was moderate but very fast. It was a 2 lane road, and the shoulder was narrow and covered with rumble strips. Suck. Fortunately, it was short. As I came to the high points of 95A, the tailwind switched to a cross wind and got really really strong. A sign warned "High Wind Area". No shit! Coming down into Silver Springs the crosswind was so bad I was leaning the bike sideways. I actually felt like the bike was going to slip out from under it, it was that bad. I made it in 30 min before sunset, as opposed to the 90 I had though I would. This may be my last night in NV. W00t.
