Day 58: Silver Springs, NV to Woodfords, CA Total Distance: 65.0 mi Moving Avg: 8.9 mph Moving Time: 7:18 Out of the Silver State and into the Golden State. Yay! Again, there were strong headwinds for most of the day. Coming from Carson City, I started to panic a bit since I was running late and I knew I would have to climb a bunch at the end of the day (about 1000') and I didn't want to do it in the dark. As it was, I got here just at sunset. Of course, the sun had actually set 1hr before, since there are giant mountains to the west of me, but it wasn't really dark yet. Upon arrival I found the motel to be horribly expensive, but the clerk recommended a B+B across the street. It was cheaper and the owner seemed pretty cool, so I'm in a B=B for the first time. The owner actually had to leave, so I'm alone here. In Carson City I stopped at a couple bike stores to pick up a new tube and tire, as well as some lube. Neither bike store had the lube I like (Finish Line Teflon dry lube) but I did get a tube and tire. From staring at the maps (something I do way too much of) there are decent odds I can make it to the beach on Saturday, as opposed to the Sunday arrival I had been assuming. Arriving on Saturday would be better for a lot of reasons, Jen wouldn't have to drive to meet me Sat night, I wouldn't loose any GPS logs, I could stay and watch the sunset, etc. It all depends how the next couple days go. Tomorrow I go over Carson Pass, then down 8500'. If I make it up decently early, and fly down the hill (which I suspect I will), I may be able to make it far enough for a Sat arrival (I'll need to cover 85+ miles). I think I can do it though. There is so much downhill! Of course, to get to the downhill, there is 3000' of uphill. Almost as bad as Monarch Pass, and likely steeper in places.
